One of my goals for this year is to make sure I eat healthy and try as much as possible to not skip breakfast. To carry out daily activities effectively, we all need to make sure we do not skip having breakfast – the most important meal to stay healthy. I did a little research on healthy breakfast, and I love trying out the fruit and nut parfait.

FRUIT AND NUT PARFAIT

Wondering what parfait is?…

Parfait is the French word for perfect, and when you add whole grains and fruit to yogurt to create a delicious breakfast or snack treat, you are perfecting yogurt’s already considerable health benefits. Typically, a yogurt parfait consists of layers of yogurt, grains such as granola or crushed gram crackers and fruit. When the fat and calories are low, it can be a healthful choice at fast-food restaurants and coffeehouses.

How do you know if your parfait is healthy?

if you look at the Nutrition Facts Panel, you would find out some yoghurt has as much sugar content as ice cream. Choose a low-sugar or a plain yogurt.  Now, I know what you are thinking, plain yogurt just is not sweet enough!  I agree. In most cases, you might find that after adding some fruit and granola the plain yogurt tastes sweet enough anyway. Regular, Greek yoghurt, the list goes on – the best option of yoghurt will depend on individual protein goals and the other foods you consume throughout the day.  If you are making a yogurt parfait for breakfast and yogurt ends up being your main source of protein. Choosing a higher protein yogurt, like Greek, may be a better option for you.  If yogurt is a side dish along with your scrambled eggs and bacon, on the other hand, you could stick with regular yogurt. Ultimately, it all depends on your individual goals and taste preferences. From berries to bananas you can create limitless fruit combinations, make sure to choose fresh fruit. Take one look at the Nutrition Facts Panel and the sugar content will surprise you!  A good rule of thumb is to choose a granola with less than 10g of sugar per serving or as low as you can find.

How to create a healthy Parfait

You are better off making your own parfait than purchasing one. Although the ingredients contained in a yogurt parfait are essentially healthy, many unnecessary sugars are usually found in this food. Restaurants can add sugar to a parfait to enhance the flavour. It is fine to purchase a store bought yogurt parfait now and then, as there are several worse breakfast choices you could make. Make sure you read the nutrition label and examine the parfait to guarantee you’re making the right decision and not gearing up for a sugar high.

It is simple to create your own healthy nutritious parfait. All you need to make your own healthy and nutritious parfait are some fresh fruits – you be creative with your preference on fruit choice, fat free yoghurt and dry, plain oatmeal or mixed nuts or granola. Simply layer your ingredients in a tall glass with yoghurt at the bottom of the glass, and top it with granola and fruits until you reach the top of the glass. Viola, you just created a breakfast full of vitamins and saved yourself unnecessary calories gain.

FRUIT AND NUT PARFAIT

I chose to lay my ingredients in a bowl by creating a bed of Greek yoghurt, and laying mixed granola with raisins and almond nuts, grapefruit, sliced strawberries, kiwi and banana side by side on the Greek yoghurt.
